Freshwater Literary Journal
We are a student-coordinated professional literary journal produced at Asnuntuck Community College since 2000, seeking submissions from the public. We consider poetry, short stories, personal essays, and creative nonfiction, and we publish a wide variety of literary work from people of all backgrounds.
Dates and Deadlines
Current Submission Period: August 15, 2016, to February 15, 2017. Acceptances and rejects will be sent on a rolling basis, no later than the end of March 2017. The new edition will be published in May 2017.
Freshwater accepts submissions of poetry, short stories, personal essays, and creative nonfiction. We seek to publish a wide variety of literary work from people of all backgrounds. We look for new experimental takes on old mediums, as well as more traditional approaches.
To submit, email your entire submission in one attachment. Make sure to include your name in the attachment.
No cover letter needed, but send a brief, one-paragraph bio with mailing address in the body of the e-mail.
Poetry: Three poems maximum, up to 40 lines each.
Prose (fiction or nonfiction): One or multiple pieces up to 1,500 words total.

Student Writing Contest
Open to full- and part-time undergraduate students enrolled during the 2016-17 academic year at Connecticut's community colleges and public universities.

1st Prize: $200
2nd Prize: $150
3rd Prize: $100
Three honorable mentions: $50 each
Winning authors will have their work published in the 2017 edition of Asnuntuck’s literary journal Freshwater and will be invited to read at The Annual Freshwater Literary Festival at the college in May 2017.
Entry deadline: January 31, 2017. Decisions made by the end of March.
Rules and Guidelines: Open to full- and part-time undergraduate students enrolled during the 2016-17 academic year at Connecticut's community colleges and public universities. Submit up to 3 unpublished stories no longer than 500 words each (with no names on the stories for anonymous judging), along with a separate sheet including name, address, college/university affiliation, e-mail address, brief biographical note, and the titles of stories submitted. Submission and notification made by e-mail only. All submissions will be considered for publication in the 2017 Freshwater Literary Journal. Submit by e-mail (as .doc, .docx, or .rtf attachments) to Freshwater@acc.commnet.edu .
About the Judge: Robin Stratton has been a writing coach in the Boston area for over 20 years. She is the author of four novels (including one that was a National Indie Excellence Book Award finalist), two collections of poetry and short fiction, and a writing guide. A four-time Pushcart Prize nominee, she’s been published in Word Riot, 63 Channels, Antithesis Common, Poor Richard’s Almanac(k), Blink-Ink, Pig in a Poke, Chick Flicks, Up the Staircase, Shoots and Vines, and many others. She is Acquisitions Editor for Big Table Publishing Company, Senior Editor of Boston Literary Magazine, and Director of the Newton Writing and Publishing Center.
