Two New Programs Offered at Asnuntuck Community College

Asnuntuck Community College will offer both Esthetician and Nail Technician programs this fall. Both programs are offered on a full or part-time basis. Day and evening classes are available. Both programs are approved for SNAP funding. Rose Gay, LME, LMT and Maria Gay, LE, MA will be co-teaching all of the classes.

Estheticians can work in the beauty industry and in the health field. Some career opportunities for Estheticians include skin care therapist in a spa, wellness center, or salon, make-up artist, product representative, instructor, or in a Dermatologist’s or Plastic Surgeon’s office. Growth in this field has been predicted by The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to be up 38% between the years 2008-2018. The Esthetician Program requires 450 hours of classroom hours. Upon completion of the program, students will obtain certification and be eligible to sit for the Massachusetts State Board exam for licensure (Connecticut does not require licensure at this time). Licensed or certified estheticians can perform many services including, but not limited to, facials, waxing, make-up, and body treatments.

The demand for nail technicians is also growing. The BLS has reported that the number of jobs for manicurists and pedicurists will increase by 17% between the years 2010-2020. In 2012 alone there were approximately 929 nail salons in Connecticut and 1,377 in Massachusetts.

Asnuntuck’s Nail Technician Program involves 200 hours of class time. Upon completion of this program students will obtain certification and be eligible to sit for the Massachusetts State Board exam for licensure (Connecticut does not require licensure at this time). Many career options are available to those going into this field. Those completing the course can decide whether they want to open their own business, be an employee or rent space in a salon. Other job opportunities include work in the fashion industry.
