ACC to Offer Healthy-Living Non-Credit Classes this Fall

Asnuntuck Community College is offering a myriad of classes to help people live healthier and simpler lives. Instructor Jeanie Beresford will be teaching classes that range from soap making to weight loss and wellness.

A one night class on soap making will be offered October 6th from 6-8:30 p.m. The class will cover the basics of soap making, including what oils to use and how to mix lye safely. Those interested in learning more about soap making can sign up for the felted soap class on either November 12th or December 8th from 6-8:30 p.m. Students will wrap locally made Blessed Creek’s soap in Marino wool roving (roving is a long and narrow bundle of fiber). The soap will then be felted so students will leave with a soap and scrub all in one. Students will be able to make additional felted soap for $5 per bar paid to instructor that night. The fee for the class is $39.00.

The one-night class “Toxins in your home…Cleaning Products” will teach students about using non-toxic, inexpensive ingredients as cleaning solutions. The class will make simple products such as laundry detergent, cleaners and scrubs. The fee is $39, and the class is on Wednesday, September 17th, from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

In the class “Fermented Foods” on Monday, October 20th, from 6-8:30 p.m., students will actively participate when they create and sample an array of fermented foods. Students will learn about the benefits of fermented foods and how to create these foods safely at home. The class will cover sauerkraut, kimchee, water kefir, milk kefir, beet kvass, lacto fermentation, and Kombucha (black tea).

A class covering the benefits of Raw Foods will include recipes and advice on avoiding pitfalls when trying a raw food diet. The class will be offered on Monday, September 15th, from 6-8:30 p.m. The fee is $39.

People looking to get at the root cause of weight gain will benefit from registering for a multi-class offering at ACC. “Get at the Roots Weight Loss and Wellness” will be offered on Tuesdays from September 9th-October 14th from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Students will not be counting points or calories as part of this class. Instructor Jeanie Beresford will work with students through journaling, testing and conversation to determine why they are having struggles with their weight loss. Discussion will cover food sensitivities, unstable blood sugar, digestive issues, stress, and mineral imbalances among other topics. Students must purchase a $20 book from the instructor on the first night of class. The fee for the multi-class course is $189.
